I have a question for anybody (but I'm looking at you Simon ) regarding Drupal.

I'm looking at setting up a site for a client that's going to be huge, and Drupal really looks like it might fit the bill. What experience does anybody have with it?

Cheers,
Nez

Hey Nez,

I recently converted Tech-bites.com from Drupal to Wordpress.

My feeling after some intimacy with Drupal and WP both is that Drupal is:

The ultimate power in the universe. For community sites, it really just rocks. It can do anything and the theme system is amazing, I even prefer it to Wordpress.

On the downside though, it kind of sucks for content creation. FCK and TinyMCE both work but, in my experienec, the integration was unstable and unruly. So for blogging or article submission, I would say "meh". On top of that, getting together all the plugins you need to get the site to do what you want can be intimidating and confusing (though not as confusing as Joomla). I wouldn't reccomend it for a store implementation either (unless you can wrap it with ZenCart or something).

But when it comes down to blogging, article management, and just your average "Web 2.0" sites, I give props to Wordpress. It's just super easy, super flexible, and seems to run faster than Drupal in most cases.

Anywho, dunno if that helps at all or not, but you really can't go wrong with Drupal. The only thing that might be more powerful (and a lot more confusing) would be ModX.

Nez,

I've finally had a chance to do some research on Drupal and it does look very good.

Here is a couple of links I've checked out.

http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,4364%22
http://www.opensourcecms.com/
and of course the drupal forum
http://drupal.org/forum

I hope these help but I suspect you have already started using drupal.

Hi Simon,

Still playing with Drupal at this stage, but it really does look good. SEF urls out of the box, forum and blog functionality out of the box, ecommerce out of the box, just a great set of core components really.

Learning the new lingo is time consuming, but I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far. Once the school holidays hit (3 weeks), I'm going to set up a proper site in Drupal and really give it the full treatment. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers,
Nez
