I'm no Boo Radley!

Something has happened to me today that was a little disturbing.

I'm a huge gadget geek. I just love new toys and always want the latest thing. I also find that now I'm working as a web designer and online marketer full time, I spend a LOT of my days sitting in front of my computers. Combine those 2 elements and you can see where the Boo Radley reference comes into play. Unless of course you don't read you heathen!

My disturbing experience came in the form of my latest gadget. You see, I'm heading off to Beechworth at the end of April to hang out Mr Ed Dale and Mr Dan Raine. You may have heard of them. The conference they're throwing should be brilliant and I feel like a very lucky boy to be able to attend.

With Beechworth being around 3 hours drive out of Melbourne I figured a hire car was the way to go. Being the nerd I am I've gone with a Prius so I can play around with it and see how cool the whole hybrid thing is. I'm looking at buying one so it seemed a perfect opportunity for a test drive.

I haven't driven in Melbourne for years, and have no idea how to get to Beechworth. The perfect opportunity for me to buy a GPS unit!

It arrived today and here's where my dilema kicked in. I took it out of the box and immediately wanted to play with it. But guess what? It couldn't find the satellites from inside the house. I HAD TO GO OUTSIDE!

What disturbed me was how much that bothered me as it took me away from the computers. I think I need help. ;)

Definitely in need of help

Nez, it sounds like a problem many computer geeks suffer from - Freshairitis - or possibly Lovemycomputertoomuch Syndrome. Either way, the treatment is a gradual process. Start by just taking a walk around the block without any gadgets (that means no phone, no pda, no laptop!!!) - do this once per week for a month.

After the first month you should be able to progress to every other day. Continue for 2 months.

3 months into treatment you should be able to manage a walk everyday, minus gadgets. You'll start to realise that the warm dusty air in your office is very different to the fresh stuff outside.

After 6 months I think you can risk taking a half day excursion without any gadgets. It will be tough and you will need a good support system around you.

In two years time after weekly half-day excursions you might just manage a weekend away without gadgets.

Finally, in 6 years time you could try a whole week's vacation. It will be tough, as by then Apple with have created computers you can carry in your ear that link to your brain, but think of the non-techie friends you could make. Imagine the "normal" conversations you could have with your wife that don't involve the words Mac Book, SEO, email, upgrade etc.

You'll thank me for it in the long run...Go on take that first step...There's a whole world waiting out there smilies/cheesy.gif

You Could Have a Bigger Problem...

Nez, what if the GPS doesn't work inside your car?? Now we all know that computers work fine inside minivans as Ed Dale has demonstrated that.

You can take your computer with you! smilies/smiley.gif

BTW, I've never heard of a GPS unit not working inside a house before. By any chance is your roof lined with lead to prevent the super heroes with x-ray vision from spying on you?

I actually went to see some friends perform at a gig last night. The venue was an hour and a half away, so I took it as an opportunity to test out the unit. It was cool to see it in action. Sad I know. smilies/grin.gif

I do have the roof and walls lined with lead though. To protect me from the kryptonite radiation. Well, not really, we just have a tin roof and the GPS couldn't find the satellites from inside.
